Aether Labs MTB Launches "Blade Guard": A Modular, Multi-Compound Frame Armor System for Real Structural Protection
Featuring Patent-Pending, Multi-Material Technology — Engineered and Manufactured in the USA
August 9, 2026 – Aether Labs MTB announced the official launch of Blade Guard, a modular, high-impact composite frame protection system engineered to deliver real structural defense for mountain bikes. Moving past the cosmetic scratch prevention of traditional thin polyurethane films, Blade Guard is designed to absorb and distribute high-energy forces, protecting frames from dents, paint cracking, and carbon fiber damage caused by rock strikes and trail debris.
Advanced Material Science: Dual-Compound & Tri-Material Technology
The core of Blade Guard's protective capability lies in its composite architecture:
-Dual-Compound Impact Shielding (Gladius & Saber): These guards utilize multi-material additive manufacturing to fuse two distinct material layers directly at the molecular level. The base consists of a flexible Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU 95A) with an engineered grid of discrete pillars and expansion slots. Upon impact, these pillars compress to absorb and dissipate kinetic energy before it reaches the frame. The top layer is a rigid TPU/PA hybrid with a Shore D hardness of 72. This low-friction cap deflects sharp trail projectiles and allows the frame to slide smoothly over obstacles, reducing the risk of adhesive snags or peeling.
-Tri-Material Sandwich Composite (Claymore): Built for the high demands of downhill and bike park riding, the flagship Claymore features a tri-material architecture. The top shell has encapsulated rigid, carbon fiber nylon discs. By embedding these rigid discs where impact energy concentrates, the Claymore delivers the heavy impact performance of a rigid skid plate with the lightness and frame-conforming flexibility of a soft guard.
Universal, Modular Sizing
Thick, traditional guards can be difficult to bend around complex frame tubes, often leading to edge lifting, bubbling, and trapped dirt. Blade Guard solves this with two key design features that provide a universal fit and adjustable coverage:
-Engineered Hinge Array: Each guard utilizes a geometric array isolated by flexible polymer hinges. This allows profiles up to 5.0mm thick to bend, flex, and wrap perfectly around asymmetrical frame contours and tight tube profiles without wrinkling or edge lifting. The guard is also easily trimmed to size using flush cutters, accommodating frame drain holes and clearing ISCG brackets or other frame hardware.
-Sequential Dovetail Linking: Featuring sliding male/female dovetail joints, Blade Guard segments connect and lock together sequentially directly on the bike. This enables riders to scale their coverage footprint seamlessly to match their frame size—creating one continuous downtube shield or targeted pads on chainstays, seatstays, and top tubes—without gaps for a seamless look.
The Blade Guard Line-Up
The Blade Guard system launches in three distinct protection levels to match different riding disciplines and weight preferences. Each model is sold in modular segments measuring 64mm (2.52 in) wide by 228mm (9 in) long to allow for universal sizing adjustability:
Thickness: 1.5 mm
Weight: 20g per segment (26.67 grams per foot)
Price: $14.99
Purpose: Ultralight, low-profile protection against flying gravel, cable rub, and light rock strikes without adding bulk to high-performance builds.
Thickness: 4.0 mm
Weight: 45g per segment (60 grams per foot)
Price: $19.99
Purpose: Balanced high-impact energy absorption and low weight for aggressive all-mountain terrain.
Thickness: 5.0 mm
Weight: 50g per segment (66.67 grams per foot)
Price: $24.99
Purpose: Heavy-duty armor featuring embedded PA12-CF reinforcement discs for maximum energy absorption against high-velocity projectiles and bottoming-out impacts.
Customizable Aesthetics
To match a rider's setup, the Gladius and Saber are offered in an expansive selection of colors. The heavy-duty Claymore features a streamlined color palette optimized for high-performance downhill protection.
Straightforward Peel-and-Stick Installation
Every Blade Guard utilizes pre-applied, industrial-grade 3M 300LSE acrylic adhesive. The entire installation is completed at room temperature with no heat guns or wet applications required:
1. Prep: Wash the frame and wipe with the included isopropyl alcohol wipe.
2. Dry Fit: Test positioning and verify crank and suspension clearance.
3. Apply: Partially peel the liner, anchor the guard, keep aligned and remove remaining liner. Press firmly from the centerline outward to lock in the bond.
4. Cure: Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to reach maximum bond strength before exposure to heavy moisture.
See installation page for more detailed instructions and install video.
